Malum, derived from the Latin word for “Evil,” is an American horror film released in 2023. Directed by Anthony DiBlasi, who co-wrote the screenplay alongside Scott Poiley, it serves as a reboot and reimagining of the 2014 film Last Shift, also helmed by DiBlasi. The cast of Malum includes Jessica Sula, Eric Olson, Chaney Morrow, and Candice Coke.
On March 31, 2023, Malum premiered in theaters across the United States. Following its theatrical release, the film became available on video-on-demand (VOD) and digital platforms starting May 16, 2023.
Critical reception
According to Rotten Tomatoes, the review aggregator website, Malum has received a favorable approval rating of 83% based on 24 reviews. The average rating for the film stands at 7/10
In his review for RogerEbert.com, Matt Zoller Seitz awarded Malum three out of four stars. He praised the film for its talented ensemble cast and noted that they seemed to have a lot of fun with the material, resulting in an impressive performance. Similarly, Matt Donago from Paste lauded the film for its gruesome indie special effects. He concluded that DiBlasi, the director, once again delivers an enjoyable experience for fans of his previous work, Last Shift.
